Michael B. Wells has been passionate about Sea Otters since 1988, during his time in college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He saw three sea otters in the kelp beds off Morro Bay and kept returning, to witness the emergence of a new sea otter colony. Morro Bay now hosts a vibrant established sea otter colony. This got him to thinking about how the sea otter fur trade had decimated the sea otters and how it was human beings who caused the problem and are the only ones who can fix it. He founded the Sea Otter Foundation in order to preserve, protect, renew, and extend sea otter colonies along the coast of California, Baja Mexico, and Oregon, where sea otters once flourished. Michael is passionate about replenishing sea otter colonies, in order that this keystone species will revitalize the kelp forests, which are important for our fisheries, absorption of carbon dioxide, and the production of oxygen for the global ecosystem.
